We are in the decade of experts.
When being told how to market ourselves, we are often told to "position ourselves as an expert in our field". But what defines someone as an expert.
The oxford dictionary states the definition of an expert as:
"a person who is very knowledgeable about or skilful in a particular area"
But this definition doesn't define what "very knowledgeable" is. Is it someone that has learnt about the area at university, or someone that has practiced in the area for many years? Is it someone that has read a book about a subject, or completed a short course and then has labeled themselves as an expert?
In these days of ghost writing and an endless supply of outsourcing company's, online, anyone can appear to be an expert online. We all know we can buy 100 articles for less than $100 from a guy in the Philippines or India, and then add them to our blog posts or even submit them for publication in print.
When choosing your expert, the key is independent investigation.
Ask questions. Let your final decision be result driven not on marketing glitz. Pick up the phone and talk to them, and talk to their other clients.
But best of all. Ask your friends, your business partners and your customers who they use and trust.
